TRADITIONAL USE

Chamomile has been used in Europe for many centuries as a medicinal plant that had been proven useful for the treatment of gastrointestinal conditions. According to historians, chamomoile was dedicated to the sun by the ancient Egyptians because of its value as a treatment for ague. In other parts of the world it was used for colds, bronchitis, kidney and bladder problems spleen, dropsy and jaundice.

Chamomile was also used as a poultice for pains and swellings, It is a stimulant, tonic, bitter and aromatic, an excellent antispasmodic and stomachic. Clinical studies show that chamomile has gentle sedative effects when used as a bedtime tea. Chamomile contains the flavonoid apigenin known to have antihistaminic effects.

MODERN USE

As a digestive aid, chamomile was found to relax the digestion. It is also believed to be useful for reducing inflammation in arthritis and relaxing the smooth muscles of the intestine. The antispasmodic action of chamomile helps to soothe menstrual cramps and the herb acts to stimulate the immune system's infection fighting white blood cells.
